SKALLYWAGS - A REVIEW

It’s a little overdue but I thought I’d write a few words about “Skallywags”, our club/music night that happened on Friday 4th November at The Dublin Castle in Camden Town, London.

This was the third Skallywags that we’d organised.  Basically, we pick the bands that a) we feel compliment each other and b) are really good, and then try and promote the hell out of it.  And thanks to everyone who made it, because it was the best one so far.  Each time it gets better and better.

Brand New Second Hand

First on the bill were Brand New Second Hand whose mixture of rap, reggae, ska and punk was hugely entertaining.  Lyrically they were brilliant and me and Pete just smiled the whole way through the set.  We used to go to school with three of the band and it was just a pleasure to see them up there doing there stuff.

Angry Vs The Bear

Next up, hailing from Colchester, Essex, were Angry Vs The Bear.  I’ve lost count how many times we’ve played with these guys but they always blow me away.  Great songs and great stage presence delivered with finely tuned craftsmanship and really nice people.  The second time we’d played with them in a week.  Hopefully many more gigs to come.

Running Club

Finally, right before we came on, were Running Club.  We’ve know these fellas for a long while now, well two of them that is, Tim and Adam, and we go back a long way.  A few years ago our band and their band were chosen, along with three other bands, to fly out to the Greek Island of Mykonos for the final of a battle of the bands competition called Rock On The Beach.  The whole thing was free and we basically just indulged ourselves as much as we could.  We struck up an unbreakable bond through drinking heavily and making fools of ourselves, in addition to playing some music of course.  It was such a pleasure to be spending time with these guys again and to see how amazing they’ve got as a band.  Having said that, they always were eff-ing good, and they did a storming set.

And then it was us.  It was great to play new songs from the album and with a new line-up and sound, the band had a really good energy to it.  The crowd were amazing, so thank you if it was you who was screaming and dancing.  Can’t wait to see you at our next show.

We’ve been back in the studio adding the finishing touches to the album so it shouldn’t be too far off being finished…hopefully!!!

IT’S BEEN A WHILE BUT…

Despite being a bit slack on the old blog front we’ve actually been really busy.

On Wednesday 12th October we had a rather last minute booking to go and play at the Royal Holloway University’s Student’s Union.  We were supposed to be supporting Ms Dynamite, but alas she couldn’t make it for whatever reason.  We had great time however and met some great people who were very kind to us - look forward to seeing Hannah Creber and friends at our gig on Friday 4th November.

Saturday 29th October our friends in Angry Vs The Bear kindly invited us to go and play at their own Halloween Extravaganza at The Bull in Colchester, Essex.  It was loud, sexy, spooky and there was lots of make up.  Also featured were Leeds band, The Chevin, who are currently based in New York.  Very good band - hopefully our paths will cross again soon.

Throughout this time we’ve been continuing with the recording of the album (back in again tomorrow to finish off the brass parts).

This coming Friday 4th November we’ll be returning to our favourite haunt in London, The Dublin Castle in Camden Town, for our own music night Skallywags.  Bands start from 8pm and the line-up is as follows:

The Kubricks - 10:15-11pm (www.thekubricks.com

Running Club - 9:30-10pm (www.runningclubmusic.com)

Angry Vs The Bear - 8:45-9:15pm (www.angryvsthebear.com)

Brand New Second Hand - 8-8:30pm (www.myspace.com/brandnewsecondhandlondon)

Tickets are £7 on the door, £5 with a flyer.

The Dublin Castle, 94 Parkway, Camden Town - 2min walk from Camden Town Station (Northern Line).
